Time For Early Education? How To Create A Montessor Environment At Home

If your child will be attending a Montessori academy soon, it's time to prepare your home. Your child will be spending their early educational days in a Montessori classroom environment. You need to extend that environment to the home, as well. Ensuring a Montessori-based home and school environment will allow your child to transition from place to place, while encouraging growth and independence at home, as well as at school. Here are four key steps you can take to create a Montessori environment at home.

Lower the Levels

When it comes to creating a Montessori environment in your home, the first thing you need to do is lower the levels. Kids can't begin exploring their independence when they can't reach key elements of their exploration. Begin by installing clothes racks and towel racks that are at your child's level. Use suction cups to ensure that the racks can be repositioned as your child grows. You should also install extenders on the faucets and light switches. That way, your child can take care of bathroom needs, such as washing their hands, on their own.

Use Kid-Friendly Containers

Children love to be independent. Unfortunately, that's difficult to do when all the containers in the house are adult-sized. To make independence a bit easier for your Montessori child, switch to kid-friendly containers for things like cereal, soaps and lotions. Small squeeze bottles will make it easier for your child to dispense hand lotion, body wash and even shampoo.

Get Busy With the Label Maker

While your child is learning to read, take advantage of the opportunities to use your label maker. Create labels for all the important items in your child's life. Be sure to include both a picture of the item and the printed word. Do this throughout the house. That way, your child will be able to equate the picture of their bed with the word bed.

Find Peaceful Activities to Share

You want your Montessori child to find quiet ways to de-stress and grow. One way to do that is to find peaceful activities that you can share together. Go out on nature walks together each day, or join a yoga group that you can do together. It's also important to find time to meditate with your child at least once a day. Meditating with your child each day will help them develop habits that will follow them into adulthood.
